Bookmakers count the cost of lockdown as sports betting resumes

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the betting industry particularly hard. While it has developed a sophisticated online presence, including websites and apps, the lack of sporting events has put a large dent in bookmaker’s profits. The European Gaming and Betting Association estimates that its members make around 40% of their gaming revenues from sports wagers. This amounts to around €2.4bn. Gambling revenues have been down as much as 60% since lockdown began in early March. Football, Europe’s biggest market for sports betting, saw seasons postponed around the continent as well as the summer’s European Championship delayed until 2021. Racing comes in at a very close second, and meets were also delayed. But both have now resumed, though there are still […]

Liverpool dominate Crystal Palace in 4-0 victory

On their march to their last league title 30 years ago, Liverpool blew away a Crystal Palace team 9-0. While the score was not as dominant in an empty Anfield on Wednesday, 25 June, the performance was. The Liverpool starting XI included both Mohammed Salah, their talismanic winger, and Andy Robertson, a world-class left back plucked from relegated Hull for only £8 million in 2017. They reminded fans why they are champions-elect, banishing the memory of a drab 0-0 against Everton in the Merseyside derby which reopened their title challenge. As has been the case with many of the Project Restart matches, the opening minutes were tentative. But the passing speed and probing runs of Liverpool’s midfield and front three […]

Liverpool only one game from first League title in 30 years

Football is truly back, and Premier League action will be gracing our screens everyday for the next week. It could be a momentous one for Liverpool as they seek to secure their first Premier League title and first league win in 30 years. They will go to last year’s victors, Manchester City, knowing that a draw would be enough to get rid of their hoodoo and finally make this year their year. That depends on how Manchester City do on Thursday, 26 June, as they travel to London to keep the title race, in theory, open. Chelsea can help another team win the league, after their draw with Tottenham Hotspur in 2016 secured the title for Leicester City. Liverpool will […]

Match Preview: Liverpool Vs Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace travel to Anfield on the back of an impressive win against Bournemouth. Liverpool have been by far the best team in the league this season and need only five points to guarantee the title but their last outing was disappointing and there was a serious lack of quality in front of goal, from the entirety of their squad. A 0-0 draw in the Merseyside derby was unusual and fans will be hoping they bounce back now. The title should be theirs, but it wouldn’t be the first time that Liverpool bottle a considerable lead in the Premier League, just as they did against Man City a few years back, so a confident win today would really ease their […]

Match Preview: Sheffield United Vs Man United

Sheffield United travel to Old Trafford tonight for a battle that could prove to be very important in the race for Europe. Sheffield United were served very badly by VAR when they played Aston Villa for the Premier League’s first game back after lockdown, with the Villa keeper blatantly taking the ball into his own goal but goal line technology failed to notify the referee and Var did not intervene. They will be feeling very hard done by and will hoping to get a result today to consolidate their position in the table. In fact if Sheffield United win this game, then they leapfrog Man United into fifth place, depending on other results. United have not played particularly well this […]
