English Football League Weekend Preview
Match Previews: Pick of the bunch
EFL Championship – Saturday
Bournemouth vs Brentford
With just a few games to go in the Championship, both these teams currently occupy a playoff place. Both teams should be comfortable enough to stay in these places, but they will be hoping to have their good form intact coming out of this one.
Bournemouth have done fantastically well to get where they are now. It looks likely that Watford will finish 2nd in the league, so playoffs will have to do for this side. They’ve gone on a great run as of recent, winning their last 7 games in the league and it has seen them as one of the best inform sides in the league. That form has come at a great time, and now they will be looking to join both Norwich and Watford back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. They have every chance of doing so, and likely the strongest team currently in the playoffs, but they will still have to perform here to keep things going.
Brentford are drawing far too many games. They’ve faltered a bit again, as they did last season, and the most they can hope for now will be playoffs. They were in the hunt for automatic promotion not too long ago, but the team has shown sides of staggering and they’ve gone down the table. There are still a lot of positives for this side though as playoffs will give them another opportunity to head up to the Premier League. The team is capable. They’re a talented side that plays attacking football, with a coach that deserves a tremendous amount of credit, but they have to start winning again.
EFL Championship – Saturday
Derby County vs Birmingham
Danger is looming for Wayne Rooney’s Derby as relegation is in sight and this one has to be 3 points for the home side. Birmingham are enjoying a good bit of form recently, and should prove extremely tough for Derby who have to give it everything they have.
Derby are without a win in 4, and that form has seen them slip to just above relegation. This team is better than that. They haven’t shown it, and Wayne Rooney has to learn quickly on the job to get his side safe. They’re in real danger of heading down to League One with Rotherham and Sheff Wed just below them. The only positive from this is Rotherham haven’t been winning either, but as Rotherham do have 2 games in hand, this one is a must win.
Unbeaten in their last 5, Birmingham have shown some fight in recent games. Their form will be a huge test for Derby who have zero confidence at the moment, but Derby can hopefully take some confidence from their record against Birmingham. The away side haven’t beaten Derby since 2016, and this is a great chance for Birmingham to finally get a victory over this side as they must be favourites heading into this one. They could ruin Derby’s chances of survival with a good result here.
EFL League Two – Saturday
Morecambe vs Bolton
Crucial game in League Two on Saturday as both these sides are neck and neck in the fight for automatic promotion.
Morecambe sit just outside of the automatic places, 1 point off Bolton and this is a huge game for both teams. The home side have won three on the bounce and have given themselves every chance of heading up to League One, but they will have to get past Bolton if that is to happen. It should be a great game, but Morecambe have to be better defensively as they do leak a lot of goals.
Bolton’s revival since February has been nothing less than spectacular. They’ve lost a couple of games in recent weeks, but still hold on to an automatic place at least for now. A win here could go a long way in guaranteeing that this side heads back up to League One at the first time of asking, and they have every chance of doing so. It should be an intense affair at Morecambe on Saturday.
