English Football League Weekend Preview
Match Previews: Pick of the bunch
EFL Championship – Saturday
Huddersfield vs Rotherham
There’s a chance that Hudderfield could still head down, but it’s Rotherham who are desperate to escape the relegation zone.
With 3 games in hand, it’s possible that Rotherham could survive in this league. They’re not showing it though, with a terrible result last weekend at home to one of the only teams below them, Wycombe. Games are running out for most teams with only 6 to play, but Rotherham will be playing quite a few games in the span of a short time and it could either hurt them or help them. They should fancy this one as Huddersfield haven’t shown much recently.
A humiliating 7-0 defeat to Norwich in their last game leaves Huddersfield with no confidence heading into an important period. For a team that not long ago was in the Premier League, they’ve no doubt taken a lot of steps back and there’s still potential that they can head down to League One which is unacceptable. They have to bounce back, and this could be a game that pulls them away from the relegation pack if they pick up a victory here.
EFL League One – Saturday
Lincoln vs Blackpool
Both teams take up a place in the playoffs, but there’s still a chance they could miss out on anything this season.
The home team haven’t won in 5 games, and they’re the team that are slipping down the playoff spots. They have to pick up some form in the last few games of the season if they are to have any chance of getting something from their season. Teams are hard on their heels, and this one won’t be easy. For a while it looked as though Lincoln would cement a spot, but things haven’t gone well over the last couple of months and they’re in danger of missing out on any chance of heading up to the Championship.
Blackpool have gone from strength to strength in recent months and they’re one of the inform teams in the league. They’ve been on a remarkable run, with 13 games unbeaten, and with their last defeat coming all the way back at the start of February. They’ve turned their season around fantastically and are now looking like a team that will end up in the playoff positions. It’s been an impressive spell from the club and confidence is with Blackpool going into this one. A win here looks as though it could be the likely outcome.
EFL League Two – Saturday
Cheltenham vs Leyton Orient
The home team could go top if things go their way, while Leyton Orient are hunting down a playoff spot.
Cheltenham deserves to go up to League One. It’s looking very likely for the team, but whether it’ll be as champions or not remains to be seen. With a game in hand over league leaders Cambridge and only two points behind, they’ve put themselves in a good position to end the season on top. A few losses in their recent games hasn’t helped ease things, but the run-in to the end of the season could see this side push on. Playoffs are still close by so they have to stay wary of the teams below them, but this team has confidence and showed that last weekend against the team sitting just below with an emphatic 4-0 win.
Leyton Orient have picked up their form in the last month, having not been defeated since the start of March. They now ask the question of teams above them, because they are a team that is only a few points off a playoff spot and the potential is there. This will be a huge test for them, but if they can come through with a positive result against one of the toughest teams, they will be well on their way. Games are running out, and they’re one of the sides that has made each game count so far on the run to the end of the season. It could continue here.
