In simple terms it is one of the most famous collections of car races worldwide. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile Formula One, usually known as Formula 1 or F1, is the top division of open-wheel formula racing cars (FIA). Each car has only one seat for the driver and no passengers.

What exactly is Formula 1 and where are f1 betting sites?

Since its first season in 1950, the World Drivers’ Championship, which later changed its name to the FIA Formula One World Championship, has been one of the most prestigious racing series in the world. The name’s use of the word “formula” refers to the set of requirements that all participants’ automobiles must meet. Grands Prix, a collection of events that make up a Formula One series or season, are held all over the world on both closed public streets and purpose-built racing tracks.

Quick F1 sports:

Formula 1 is a sport worth betting on and there are many sites to do so. It has rules and regulations just like any other sport, but before we dive in deep, let’s look at some quick facts:

  • Ten teams participate in the F1 tournament, and each team has two drivers.
  • Formula 1 cars are amongst some of the safest cars in the entire world.
  • A pit stop to change tires takes less than 3 seconds
  • The highest speed ever recorded in F1 was 372.5 kmh which is 231.5
  • F1 car engines only last as long as 5 races maximum

How many people are using the best betting sites for the F1?

Maybe because there are formula 1 races on multiple continents involving many different nations, but it is a sport in the top 10 list of sport betting popularity. This means that out of all of the sports in the world, and all the sports that people can and do bet on, that F1 betting is amongst the top 10 worldwide.

What country is the most popular for F1 races?

To give you some insight into sport popularity, the F1 races are actually much more popular than the NFL (national football league) in the United States.

When it comes to physically watching the races, the United States Grand Prix is currently the most popular race. On average this particular race brings up to 400,000 viewers who get involved with the audience.

How are points scored in the F1 races?

In order to make accurate predictions while betting on the F1, you should probably be aware of some of the rules of the races. Not only are there particular rules the drivers need to adhere to, but they will also be awarded points through the F1 scoring system. Even though it is very possible for two drivers to get the same points in just one Grand Prix race, it is extremely rare for two drivers to get the same number of points across an entire Formula 1 season.

Position when  crossing the finish line Points awarded
1st Place 25
2nd Place 18
3rd Place 15
4th Place 12
5th Place 10
6th Place 8
7th Place 6
8th Place 4
9th Place 2
10th Place 1
11th Place 0

As with any sport, there are times when points will be awarded, as well as times when they will not be. Take a look below at the main rules:

Unless at least two laps have been completed under green flag conditions, no points will be given out. What are green flag conditions? They are regular “ideal” laps that do not have any penalties handed out to the drivers.

Then depending on how much of the race has been completed at the time of points being given, the value of those points changes.

  • If less than a quarter of the race is finished, the top five finishers will receive points in the order of 6 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1.
  • If between a quarter and a half of the race is finished, the top nine finishers of the race will receive points on a system of 13 – 10 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1.
  • If half to three quarters of the race is finished, the top 10 finishers will receive points on a basis of 19 – 14 – 12 – 9 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 3 – 2 – 1.

Points are generally awarded per race as well as collected over the entire season. The driver (his team) with the highest number of points at the end of the racing series is named the winner of the overall competition. This is a truly prestigious award and one of the highest aspirations for many drivers that aim for this in their career.

Where are the F1 races held?

In total there are 34 countries that have held races for the Formula 1 and Grand Prix races. There have been a total of 72 seasons and the countries vary slightly by year.

Different types of betting markets for the F1 racing

Outright bets

The most typical type of wager that players will encounter is this one. In essence, an outright bet is a gamble on the outcome of a single event. Therefore, it may be a wager on who will win the Championship or a specific race. They typically provide the lowest value. When looking for a bet to place, players should consider other betting options because there are certainly situations when this isn’t the case. You will see these bets the most frequently because players place these bets more than others.

Driver Matchups

In driver matchup bets, you place a wager on which of two drivers you believe will place first or second in a forthcoming race. You win your wager as long as the driver you select finishes ahead of the opposing driver in the race! Nothing else about the race is important. It is irrelevant where these two drivers finish or even where the other drivers place. You succeed as long as the driver you chose defeats the other driver. If you believe a driver won’t have a realistic chance of winning the race, these bets can be incredibly helpful.

The top three (or podium)

A top three or podium finish is when you bet on specific F1 racers to end a race among the top three positions. These wagers will have marginally worse odds than wagers on clear winners. This is because the bet itself, which pays out anytime the driver places in the top three spots, obviously has a higher likelihood of success. If you’re betting on a strong driver, podium finishes are a wonderful way to make money. Even if they have a horrible race, you still have a chance of them slipping onto the podium. Additionally, it implies that gamers can wager on many drivers and increase their payout.

Proposition bets

You bet on which of two drivers you think will finish first or second in an upcoming race when you place a driver matchup wager. As long as the driver you choose finishes the race before the rival driver, you win your wager! The rest of the race is irrelevant. It makes no difference how these two drivers fare or even how the other drivers fare. As long as the driver you selected outperforms the opposition, you are successful. These bets might be quite useful if you think a driver won’t have a good chance of winning the race.

Accumulator or group bets

When many bets are combined into a single wager. This will result in a bet with higher odds and greater risk. Because every bet component must be a winner for the wager to win, it carries a higher level of risk. As a result, in order for an accumulator wager on three drivers to finish on the podium to be successful, they must all place among the first three finishers. This would have a far higher payout than betting on each driver to finish on the podium independently, but it would also carry a lot more risk.

Who has won the Formula 1 racing?

If you are an avid watcher of the F1 races then you might already be familiar with the names of some popular drivers. This can be a good bit of knowledge to maintain when looking for drivers and teams to place wagers on when betting on the F1. When you are researching your betting markets and sites it’s always worth knowing who has won in the past and noting whether they are listed to compete for the upcoming year.

Take a look below at the winners and points they scored each year for the past decade.

Year Winner Points over the season
2021 Max Verstappen 395.5
2020 Lewis Hamilton 347
2019 Lewis Hamilton 413
2018 Lewis Hamilton 408
2017 Lewis Hamilton 363
2016 Nico Rosburg 385
2015 Lewis Hamilton 381
2014 Lewis Hamilton 384
2013 Sebastian Vettel 397
2012 Sebastian Vettel 281
2011 Sebastian Vettel 392

Things to consider when looking for F1 betting sites

What odds are available?

As you probably already know, there are countless bookmakers available for bettors to use so you have a lot of choice when it comes to choosing a site. When you decide on what betting market you wish to place bets on you should pay attention and compare the different value of odds across the various sites. For example you could have three sites that all cover the exact events and betting markets you’re after but one may have much more competitive odds than the rest. This difference in odds value could be a substantial difference in the potential profit you make – if your bets are successful.

Make sure to check the stats

Before placing a wager on a Formula 1 race, we advise you to review prior F1 statistics. Which motorists are in good shape? Does a driver perform as effectively in dry or wet conditions? What are the average laps that the involved drivers have. It is so easy these days to keep track and follow the relevant stats for the F1 and other sports on betting sites. Sometimes these are done in the “news” section of a bookmaker website and other times it is found within the “blog” section.

A driver’s track record

As with any type of sport, you will have some players with a better scorecard than others. When you are starting to consider the bets you want to make you should focus on making research your priority with regards to the drivers. You wouldn’t want to place a bet on a driver that has a bad track record on a particular race track if that race track is where the next race is taking place. By knowing in advance what road conditions the driver does best in and the average position they have ended previous races, you’ll be able to land much more likely bet outcomes.

What position do drivers start in?

It’s no surprise that the drivers in the first few positions at the start of the race have a slight advantage. A driver who starts at the front of the lineup has a better chance of doing well in the race. It might be challenging for a driver starting at the rear of the grid to finish in the positions that award the most points. However, this is not a guarantee of the finishing positions as the track itself can make a huge difference too. For example, if a track has many corners then it might be trickier for cars at the back to overtake in comparison to a track with multiple long straight sections of the race course.

Will the weather impact the race?

As with any kind of vehicle, bad weather can certainly affect a race. So as expected, the outcome of a race can be greatly influenced by the weather. Find out about vehicle constructors and the dry or wet tyres they use. Have you checked the weather for the location that the race is taking place? Have you seen if there is clear skies or rain expected? If you are aware of the weather that the race will be held in, then you have a better chance of making a successful bet prediction on the race outcomes.

Tips to stay safe while using F1 betting sites

As with most things that include money, you need to make sure you are staying as safe as possible so you don’t run into any problems. Betting and betting sites are no different. In order to stay safe while betting you should always try to follow a few points to stay as safe as possible when it comes to using your money on F1 betting sites.

  • Check for licences

All reputable betting sites are happy to show their licences and legal documentation. Typically you can find this information about the website’s reputation and legal “paperwork” on the bottom of the homepage along with the stamps of licence. These licences show that they are reputable and safe to use as they are listed with the gambling associations. If you cannot find a licence stamp then you should reconsider using the site. Good sites won’t hide this information.

  • Check for safety certificates and SSL encryption

One quick way to determine if a site is safe to send money to is through the padlock on the URL bar. If there is no padlock icon then you should reconsider using the site with personal or identifiable information. If the site does have a padlock then you are protected and can proceed, but always make sure to use caution.

  • Make sure they have the same payment methods you need

Not every payment method works the same way, so not every betting site has the same methods available for punters to use. If you are looking to use a debit card you’ll probably  be in luck since that is the most common payment method across F1 betting sites, and most other bookmakers are the same. Always check the site you want to start betting on F1 races to make sure they cover all the deposit and withdrawal payment methods that you might want or need to use.

Step by step guide: How to bet on F1 using online betting sites

For today’s example we will be using the website Bet 10 to show how you can use this bookmaker site to take part in Formula 1 betting.

Step #1: Sign up or log in to your Bet 10 account

If you have an existing profile or account on the Bet 10 website then you just need to log in using the grey “login” button at the top of the site’s homepage on the right hand side. Once you have clicked it you will be met with a pop out menu with a registration form to fill out.

What;s great about this page is that as you put just your postcode in, you will notice how a list of home addresses will auto populate into a drop down menu for you to select your correct full address. Make sure this address is correct as remember, you might need it for verification later on.

Picking your 10bet username

Picking your 10bet username

The final page of the registration form asks you to create a username for your account. This should not be the same as your legal name. Not only do you need a username but you will also need a password in order to keep your account secure. Once this has been done you will then need to input your chosen currency (assuming you are in the UK this will automatically auto populate to be GBP- British Pound Sterling). Finally you get to choose the deposit limits you want to restrict yourself to per day, per week and per month. This is one way the website keeps their punters safe from overspending.

Step #2: Depositing money into your new account

So, your new account is open and now you want to start betting on F1 using this site. First however, you must deposit money into your online wallet so that you can actually place those wagers. In order to do this you need to start at the homepage and look for the bright green “deposit” button at the top right of the screen. Clicking this will open a new window for you.

Once you see the new window you will first see the balance you have available. One the left side of the screen you will see the “deposit” button. Click this to open up the deposit screen. From the image below you can see the three different payment methods available to you. The most common method is to pay into your account using your bank and linked debit card.

On this deposit screen you can choose the actual cash value you would like to deposit and manually type it in, or if you would just prefer you can select one of the three pre-selected options underneath the text box. £20, £50 and £200 are all selectable.

This is a good time to enter any bonus codes you might have. Remember once you have set everything up, you must click the dark green “deposit” button otherwise your account will not be topped up.

Step #3: Finding the sport you want in the sportsbook

Choosing Motor Racing at 10bet

Choosing Motor Racing at 10bet

In order to place bets on the F1, you will need to find the sport in the sportsbook. From the homepage, you will need to find the “motor racing” section on the left hand side of the page. This sidebar is the sportsbook content list. Unfortunately on this site they are not listed in alphabetical order which can make it a little harder to find the correct sport.

Once you open the motor racing section you will be brought straight to a page with multiple races available that you can bet on. In this image above it shows that the first race you can see to bet on is the Singapore Grand Prix.

Step #4: Creating a betting slip

Selecting Lewis Hamiliton to win the Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Selecting Lewis Hamiliton to win the Singapore F1 Grand Prix

So you are already inside the Formula 1 betting page and now you want to make your first bet slip. In order to do this all you need to do is click the outcome you want. In this example above you can see that for the Singapore Grand Prix I have selected the option for Lewis Hamilton to win. The odds for him to be the winner of this race is 16/1. This means if you bet just £5 then you will receive £85 in winnings. What’s great about the bet slip is you can play around with the payment value to see the difference in profit winnings should your bet be successful.

Do not forget to click the “place bets” button to finalise your bet otherwise you won’t be able to win anything – even if your outcome wins.

Step #5: Settling your bet

Once your bet has been finalised there is nothing left to do but wait. If you are a fan of watching the F1 races then you can follow along with the live notifications. If you prefer to just wait and see if you’ve won after the races are over then you can do just that and the website will notify you of any winnings – if you were successful.

Step #6: Cashing out your winnings

Once the F1 betting races have finished, you’ll be able to head over to your Bet 10 e-wallet and start withdrawing your funds (if you have a positive balance that is) and you can do this by going to the “balance” button on the homepage at the top of the screen and clicking “withdraw” on the left hand side.

Just be aware, you will only be able to withdraw to the same payment method that you deposited with. This means if you deposited with your debit card you will only be able to withdraw onto the same debit card and bank account. If you deposit into a different payment method you will then be able to withdraw to the same one which opens another option for you.

Final thoughts on F1 or Formula 1 betting sites

As with any sport, you really should focus on doing some research on the sport in question before you dive in with your money. Before placing wagers you should follow the tips and tricks above to help you understand not only the sport but the drivers involved in the races too. By having as much knowledge and experience with understanding the races as possible, you’ll have more success with the bets placed when betting on F1 / Formula 1 racing sites. More success means more chance at winning and potentially more money in your pocket as a reward. You can’t complain about that now can you!
