How we Rank the Best Greyhound Betting Sites

Betting on the dogs is just about as iconic a pastime as horse racing betting. It is a cherished pastime that has been practised in the UK and worldwide for centuries. It is no surprise, then, that a lot of people want to know the answer to the question: what is the best greyhound betting site?

Like with any other subcategory of betting site, the answer to this question is not clear-cut. There is a range of different aspects to consider, all of which combine to form an overall picture of a greyhound betting site’s overall quality. In this article, we will describe the most important of these aspects and how they inform us so that we can accurately rank the best greyhound betting sites.

Aspect Description
Diversity of Markets Experienced and discerning bettors will want to see a whole host of betting options on offer from their preferred greyhound betting site, including accumulators, challenges, trap specials, forecasts, and perhaps more. Having a comprehensive selection of races and events to peruse is also important to many greyhound race punters, and the most selective of bettors may even wish to bet within markets outside of the UK. The greater the diversity of markets offered by a greyhound betting site, the better it will satisfy the needs of a greater range of customers, and so the higher it will rank with us.
Odds To maximise their profits, greyhound betting sites do not merely bank on bettors losing their bets. They also carefully calculate margins on their odds so that they can still profit slightly overall if the expected number of bets are won by punters. Of course, the better odds that are offered by a particular greyhound betting site, the more attractive it will be to potential new customers who are choosing between different betting sites. Sensible bettors will shop around to find out the best odds before choosing who to bet with, and this factor alone can make up a potential customer’s mind. Some greyhound betting sites will offer better odds on particular markets or events, to try to gain an edge in popularity with the relevant section of the betting demographic. Other sites have a general trend of offering better odds over time than competitors. These are the sites which will more often than not rank more highly with us.
Diversity of Payment Options E-wallets are quickly becoming the overwhelmingly most popular payment method for bettors in the UK. They are fast to set up, quick and easy to use, naturally optimised for mobile, and, perhaps most importantly, offer lightning-fast or instant withdrawal times. Sites which offer the likes of PayPal, Skrill, Trustly, and Neteller, then, score well in our estimations. We do not only look for e-wallet payment options, however. The greyhound betting sites that rank the highest in this aspect will offer a great number and a broad diversity of payment options, including non-e-wallet methods such as the relatively new and near-instant Visa ‘Fast Funds’ bank transfer method.
Reputation A greyhound betting site that promises the world but is a new and/or unknown entity with little to no reviews or accreditation is almost certainly a big red flag to be avoided at all costs. Remember that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is, and we fully embrace this when we are ranking the best greyhound racing sites.
Security and Safety Similarly to the previous aspect, if a betting site offers a glittering package of tantalising offers, great odds, and excellent diversities of markets and payment options, yet it has infamously poor security and you run a significant risk of losing any money you put into their platform, then, despite all the good features, why would you ever choose to use them? That is why this is such an important factor for our decision-making process.
Live Streaming In the modern betting world, being able to watch the events on which you are betting, as they are happening, from the comfort of your home and perhaps even from your smartphone screen, is where the entire fun of betting comes into play for many punters. This feature is a dealbreaker for many potential customers of any greyhound betting site, and so it is an important factor for us to consider.
UX/UI This aspect and the next do not relate specifically to greyhound betting sites, but they are important to any type of betting site, so they will always be part of our evaluation.

Having a website – and preferably a good app, too – that is slick, easy to use, fast, intuitive, modern, and attractively designed can make all the difference in attracting undecided bettors looking for their greyhound betting site of choice. Conversely, a slow, dull, and frustrating user experience with an obtuse and unintuitive layout and design can easily turn a previously-interested bettor away. For these reasons, UX and UI are important considerations when we are ranking the best greyhound racing sites.

Promotions Arguably the biggest, simplest, but most effective draw for potential new customers is the welcome offer. This is the first piece of advertising for a greyhound betting site that most people will see, and if it is a more appealing offer than any of its competitors, this can be (and very often is) enough to seal the deal from a punter’s very first glance. Having good, consistent promotions and bonuses thereafter will keep customers from straying to other sites. For these reasons, this category always has a major influence on our final ranking of a greyhound betting site.

The top greyhound betting site reviews:

RhinoBet

Pros:

  • See next off greyhounds races on the home page
  • Get price boosts on selected greyhounds markets

Cons:

  • No specific greyhounds promos

When it comes to new betting sites, RhinoBet has become one of the most respected out there. While it is still a newcomer to the scene, it has already made a name for itself. If you’re someone who wants greyhounds markets specifically, do they have what you’re looking for?

When you visit the site, right away on the home page you’ll find all of the next off greyhounds races. That allows you to pick the markets and odds that you want very quickly and easily. Of course, you can find even more on their greyhounds page. There’s plenty of markets available, covering a wide range of upcoming and in play events. With so much available come out you should find just what you’re looking for.

What you will notice here as the new member, is that the site don’t offer any specific greyhounds promos. That is a little bit disappointing, as you would hope to find some specific promos to give you more on your bets. However, there’s plenty of other promos that give you extra that you can use to bet on these markets. As such, out you won’t be missing out.

The odds on their greyhound markets are great, especially compared to other betting sites on the market. What makes them even better is selected price boosts for certain races and events. Make sure you keep an eye out for these when you come to make your bets.

If you become a member at RhinoBet, you’ll be able to find all the greyhounds markets that you could want. These markets come at great prices too, so you can get the absolute best odds on your bets every time.

That is a shame, as we would have liked to see this. However, there are other promos that give you extras such as free bets that can be used on greyhounds races.

Kwiff Greyhound Betting

Kwiff is a unique betting service as it promotes the fact that your odds could be boosted after you have placed your bet. It’s a unique selling point that isn’t seen at other major UK bookmakers.

As a welcome bet for new customers, Kwiff offers a £20 surprise bet when you bet £10 on any sports market with 1/2 odds or greater. Another unique selling point from other major bookies.

Pros

  • Kwiff offer international Greyhound racing for customers to bet on
  • Customers have a chance to receive random “Supercharged” betboosts once their bet has been place. Meaning your odds could improve and potential winnings could be higher at any given moment

Cons

  • No live stream service for Greyhound racing
  • Payment options are limited to credit and debit cards and PayPal only. No Ewallets or Cryptocurrencies are accepted
  • Kwiff is mostly an online casino site with limited sports options
  • Margina appear to be higher than their competitors

Kwiff is a good choice for Greyhound betting as its unique app and site brings personality to gambling and brings excitement. The chance that one of your bets could be randomly boosted is a quirky yet fun dynamic. There are alos plenty races to choose from. However, if you were looking to watch your bets live with baited breath. Or use cryptocurrencies to fund your account, you may want to look elsewhere.

Coral

You know Coral as a well established and respected betting site. Are they best place for greyhound betting, in particular?

You’ll see right away that they have Best Odds Guaranteed on their greyhounds races, and that means you’re going to get some of the best prices here. They offer better value than a lot of other betting sites out there, making them a good option for you.

They offer an excellent range of markets in the sport as well, which are easily navigated in their greyhounds section. That makes it easy for you to find just the market you’re looking for.

What we were surprised by is the fact that greyhounds aren’t covered in the in play betting section. That means you can’t bet on them as the racing happens, and there’s no live streaming for these races in particular. You’ll want to keep this in mind when considering this site.

Overall though, Coral do offer an excellent experience for anyone looking to bet on greyhounds. With good pricing and so many markets, there’s always going to be the perfect bet for you here.

NetBet

Greyhounds are one of the most popular sports to bet on in the UK, so any betting site you sign up with needs to have good markets in it. What can you expect when you go to NetBet?

You’ll see right away that they have many greyhounds markets, enabling you to find just the right bet for you. At time of writing there are nearly 200 markets that you can search through, and these markets cover greyhounds outside of the UK too. Having more choice is always great, so we were pleased to see that here.

As well as this, you’re going to get some great odds on your greyhounds bets, too. When you compare odds with other sites as you shop around, you’ll see that greyhounds markets here are always very well priced. We were hoping to see best odds guaranteed here for greyhounds, but right now the site only offers it for horse racing. This would be good to see added in the future.

If there’s one nitpick we have with the site, it’s that it can be rather slow to load. It’s not ideal as you’ll always have to click through to see the greyhounds markets, and you don’t want to wait through multiple load screens to get to your bet. Hopefully, again this is something that can be improved on, as the site itself is easy to navigate and use.

When you’re looking for the best greyhound bets, you’ll be able to get a lot out of NetBet. With plenty of markets and some great value odds, you’ll find just the bet you want here. If you’re not already a member get signed up and try them out today.

You can check out everything they have to offer with the ‘Greyhounds’ tab on the left hand side of the home page. This takes you to the ‘next 5’ page, where you can see all the upcoming races. You can even click the tab to watch them live, if you wish. You can also find all races happening today, and other upcoming races from this page.

As a member you can also check out their promos, where you can take advantage of a range of different deals. However, you will see they don’t have a lot of greyhound specific deals, compared to the other sports covered.

Introduction

Do you want to place bets on greyhound races? You’ve come to the right place. On this page, you’ll find a detailed summary of greyhound betting online, along with some of the best online sportsbooks that offer greyhound betting. We’ll run you through how to pick a site, sign up and get your first bet placed. As well as this, we’ll share some tips and help you learn the ropes.

Carry on reading to learn all about betting on greyhound races. When you’re done, register at one of our recommended sportsbooks and start placing some bets. First, we’ll run through greyhound racing and tell you all about it, then we’ll look at some top greyhound betting sites. Let’s get started!

Greyhound Racing in the UK

Back in the 18th century and for a long time before that, coursing was common. This is where animals such as greyhounds are used to hunt smaller animals by sight. The people who practised coursing would be on horseback and they would often do it competitively. As a matter of fact, competitive coursing was legal in the UK until 2004. Since then, it’s also been illegal to hunt any mammal with dogs, with the two exceptions being rats and rabbits.

Modern greyhound racing evolved from coursing to using a mechanical lure to encourage the dogs to run, not a live animal. On 11 September 1876, an event in Hendon saw six dogs race along a 400-yard course, chasing an artificial hare. This is the earliest known case of greyhound racing with a mechanical lure. However, it didn’t prove popular with the general public.

Fast forward to 1926. This was when the Greyhound Racing Association was formed. Charles Munn had partnered with Major Lyne-Dixson, who was at the time an important name in the coursing world. The two found a few more partners and together they formed the association, hoping to develop greyhound racing and make money out of it. Later that year, the first modern greyhound race in the UK took place:

  • Location: Belle Vue Stadium in Manchester
  • Date: 24 July 1926
  • Spectators: 1,700
  • Participating greyhounds: 7

This time, greyhound racing proved to be a big hit. Just a few years later in 1929, there were a total of 16 million attendances at greyhound racing events throughout the UK. By the 1940s, there were 77 licensed tracks in the country and a further 33 that weren’t licensed. Nowadays, however, these numbers are a lot smaller: there are 21 licensed venues and three unlicensed ones.

Naturally, people wanted to bet on the outcomes of these races. And so they did.

Common Greyhound Racing Terms

Before we talk more about betting on greyhound racing, we’ll run through some common terms. If you’re going to bet on these races a lot, it’ll help to know the terminology. Here are some words and phrases you may come across, along with their respective meanings:

  • Bankroll. Money that you’ve set aside specifically for betting or gambling in general
  • Box. This is another term for ‘trap’, which you’ll see further down
  • Chasing. When you lose money on one bet and place another hoping to recoup your loss and make a profit
  • Dead Heat. This is where it’s impossible to tell which of two greyhounds has won the race; in this case, a judge usually decides
  • Grading System. A system designed to ensure that greyhounds of a similar stamina level and performance standard race against one another
  • Jolly. This term refers to the favourite of the race, i.e. the greyhound most people think will win
  • Lure. The mechanical device, usually fashioned to look like a hare, zooms around the track, luring the greyhounds and encouraging them to chase after it
  • Open. A race where only greyhounds of the best calibre and breeding take part
  • Perfecta. The first two greyhounds to cross the finish line in order
  • Post Time. The exact time a race is scheduled to begin
  • If odds go down, e.g. from 10/1 to 9/1, they’re said to have shortened
  • Puppy. Any greyhound less than two years old; some start racing when they’re as young as 15 months
  • Superfecta. The first four greyhounds to cross the finish line in order
  • Take Out. This is the money the racetrack takes from the money people have wagered as profit
  • Tote. A betting system where wagers are put into a communal pool and everyone who wins gets a share of the prize fund
  • Trap. A trap is a metal cage that holds a greyhound in place. When the starting whistle is given, all trap doors fly open and the greyhounds are free to start running
  • Trial. A race where there’s no betting; this is to give the greyhounds and their trainers some free, non-competitive experience
  • Trifecta. The first three greyhounds to cross the finish line in order
  • Winner’s Circle. After the race, a short ceremony is held at the winner’s circle where the winner of the race is honoured

Betting Opportunities for Greyhound Racing

Even though there aren’t as many venues where greyhound racing takes place, it’s still quite popular. There are many races that take place throughout the year and, consequently, many opportunities for greyhound betting online.

Races can be grouped into several different categories. These are explained in detail below:

Type Minimum Prize Money Number of Rounds Further Details
Greyhound Derby £50,000 Six There are two: the Scottish Greyhound Derby and the English Greyhound Derby
Category One Race £12,500 One to Four All rounds must be completed within 15 days
Category Two Race £5,000 One to Three All rounds must be completed within 15 days
Category Three Race £1,000 One or Two All rounds must be completed within nine days
Invitation Race £750 Not Specified A special type of race where participants are invited; usually held before a proper race
Minor Open Race £100 Not Specified A race that doesn’t belong in any of the other categories

The Scottish Greyhound Derby has taken place since 1928. Its current venue is Shawfield Stadium in the Shawfield district of Rutherglen, which is near Glasgow. The racing track is 480 metres in length.

As for the English Greyhound Derby, this dates back to 1927. It’s currently held at Towcester Greyhound Stadium in Towcester, Northamptonshire, whose track is 500 metres long. Of all the greyhound racing events in the UK, this one is the biggest and most prestigious. It attracts the biggest trainers and the most well-bred racing greyhounds.

Here are some interesting facts about the English Greyhound Derby:

  • Four different greyhounds have each won it twice
    • These are Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk; each of these won their two races in consecutive years; no single greyhound has won it three or more times
  • The trainer with the most wins is Charlie Lister OBE, who was won seven times
    • The runner-up is Leslie Reynolds with five wins
  • Female greyhounds have won a total of five races
    • In greyhound racing, there’s no gender distinction with males and females racing alongside each other
  • Over three-quarters of winner trainers have been British
    • British trainers have won 75 times compared with Irish trainers who have logged 16 wins over the years

What is Virtual Greyhound Racing?

As with many sports, virtual versions have grown in popularity as we move to more digital world. Virtual greyhound racing is no different and companies like bet365 and Bet UK offer virtual races throughout the day, normally every few minutes.

How do I bet on Virtual Greyhounds?

Most bookmakers allow you to access virtual greyhound betting via their dedicated mobile sports betting apps, as these provide a great platform for betitng on the go.

Types of Greyhound Racing Bets

Like with other races and sporting events, greyhound racing has a range of different bets you can place. Some of the most common ones are listed below:

  • Win. For this, you bet on a single greyhound to win the race
  • Each-Way. This is made up of two bets: a standard win bet and a place bet. For the place bet to win, the greyhound has to finish first or in one of the race’s pre-determined places, e.g. second and third. The number of places varies from one race to the next
  • Place. A bet that pays if the chosen greyhound finishes in one of the race’s pre-determined places
  • Forecast. For this bet, you pick two greyhounds: one to come first and one to come second. The bet wins if both predictions are correct
  • Tricast. The same as the forecast bet, but with three picks and all of them need to be correct for the bet to win
  • Reverse Forecast. This is almost the same as the forecast bet, except the greyhounds don’t need to be in a particular order; so long as they’re both in the top two, the bet will win
  • Win Without the Favourite.
  • Multiple. Also known as an accumulator, this is a single bet made up of two or more selections, i.e. more than two bets on separate events. Each individual bet has to win for the overall bet to win. This is riskier than placing the bets individually, but it has the potential for greater returns. A double has two selections, a treble has three and an accumulator has four or more

Betting on Traps vs Greyhounds

In a typical UK greyhound race, there are six greyhounds taking part. At the start, they’re lined up in traps. Each of these is numbered and each racer wears a bib of a different colour to help identify it as it races. Many punters prefer to back specific greyhounds. Some, however, place wagers on specific traps. If you were to bet on trap 2, for example, your bet would win if the greyhound in this particular trip won the race.

So why do some people bet on traps and not greyhounds? They believe that some starting positions can be more advantageous than others. Research into this was carried out and found that trap 2 was the most likely to win and trap 5 the least likely. The full results are as follows:

Trap Number Win Percentage
1 (leftmost) 17.06%
2 17.42%
3 17.31%
4 16.73%
5 14.66%
6 (rightmost) 16.82%

Many punters will be very likely to bet on trap 2, given the results above. However, they may also take into account the greyhounds taking part in the race and other factors.

Overall though, you can’t just go by the data above. If you bet on trap 2 every single time, you’re likely to lose most of the time and your greyhound betting experience won’t be any fun. Don’t let the results in the table dictate your betting decisions, but bear them in mind if you get stuck and can’t decide.

Greyhound Betting Sites

Since greyhound racing is a very popular pastime, it should come as no surprise that there are lots of opportunities for betting on it. There are thousands of brick-and-mortar betting shops throughout the UK where you can bet on it. You’ll also find loads of online sportsbooks where bets can be placed on it too.

If you’re looking to get into greyhound betting online, you’re spoiled for choice. Pretty much every major betting site lets you place bets on greyhound races. Here’s a list of our favourites:

  • William Hill
  • Bet365
  • BoyleSports
  • 10Bet
  • Ladbrokes
  • Unibet
  • Smarkets
  • Betway
  • BetVictor

Each of these online sportsbooks offers plenty of opportunities to bet on greyhound races, along with many other sports betting markets. These sites tick lots of boxes, have great reputations and are well worth considering.

Having many top-rated online sportsbooks to choose from is ideal, especially when every option has a lot to offer. However, some people don’t have lots of choices and struggle to pick the right one. If you’ve looked through our list of recommendations and you’re not sure which one to go for, don’t worry.

When you can’t decide on a sportsbook, you should think about what you want from one and see which option suits your needs the best. There are many criteria you may wish to consider, including:

  • Greyhound betting markets. What races are covered? What betting options are there for the races?
  • Other betting markets. What other racing events and sports are covered? Do the options cover international, national and local events?
  • Other gambling opportunities. Is the site just a sportsbook or does it offer casino games too? Are bingo, poker and virtual sports available too?
  • Payment methods. What payment methods can be used for making deposits and withdrawals? Are there any fees? How long are the processing times for transactions?
  • Bonuses. What’s the welcome bonus for new players? Are there any promotions aimed at existing players? Is there a loyalty scheme and/or VIP club?
  • Customer support. How can you get in touch with customer support? When is it available?

If you get stuck, look for some reviews from people who have signed up to the sites you’re looking at. See what they have to say and their comments may help you make your decision.

What You Should Know Before Placing Greyhound Racing Bets

Betting on greyhound races can be a lot of fun. If you’re a beginner, you should be aware of a few things before you get started:

  • Odds
    • These determine your payout and they can change right up to when the race is held. There are three main types of odds: fractional, decimal and American. In the UK, it’s the fractional type that’s the most common. When you enter your stake, you should see how much money you’ll make from the bet if it’s successful, so you don’t have to do the calculations yourself. Still, it’s handy to have a basic understanding of how odds work
  • Money
    • Betting on any kind of sport isn’t guaranteed to yield a profit. When betting on greyhound races, you may win and make some money, but over the long term, you’re more likely to run up a loss. If you happen to win, it’s best not to get carried away and start placing bets with big sums of money. Instead, you should keep your winnings and spend them on something else
  • Races
    • You should always be aware of what event you’re betting on, what greyhounds are racing and who their trainers are. In the next section, we’ll talk more about how having this knowledge can help you make better betting decisions. You need to be clued up about greyhound racing so you know what you’re doing and can find your way around betting sites easily
  • Winnings
    • If you’re lucky enough to win, you’ll no doubt want to get your hands on your winnings. However, you should be aware that you won’t get your winnings straight away. At most sportsbooks, you’ll have to wait for the site to process your withdrawal request. Once this has been done, the amount of time it takes your money to reach you depends on your payment method. So, before you start placing bets, find out when you can realistically expect to get your winnings, if you get any that is

Greyhound Betting Tips

Most people who visit greyhound betting sites want to make a profit on their wagers. Not everyone manages to do this – the odds are always against you – but a lucky few do. There’s no guaranteed way to make a profit, but there are some tips that can help you lose less money in the long run:

  • Knowledge is key
    • When betting on any kind of race or sporting event, the more you know about it, the better decisions you’ll make. Here are some factors to take into consideration when placing bets on greyhounds:
      • What other greyhounds are taking part and who their trainers are
      • What a greyhound’s recent form and past statistics are like
      • What its trap number is
      • Whether it’s raced at that venue before
      • What its stamina is like
      • How quickly it can break free from traps
      • What the trainer’s recent form is like
      • How the greyhound has performed on similar tracks
  • Shop around for the best odds
    • Even highly rated greyhound betting sites may not always have the best odds. If you’re serious about trying to make money, you should place bets with the best odds you can find. You may have to shop around, but it can be worth it in the end, especially if your bets are successful
    • Remember, the odds determine how much you’ll win. They can also change in the run-up to a race. You tend to get the best deals when you place bets in advance, though you may get some good odds on the day too
  • Take advantage of bonuses
    • All greyhound betting sites have bonuses of some kind. It’s worth making the most of these whenever you can so that your deposits go further and you get more chances to place bets. There’s always some kind of reward for registering and making your first deposit, along with regular bonuses for existing players.
    • Before claiming special offers, always look through the associated terms and conditions so you’re aware of what’s being asked of you and what the bonus’s restrictions are
  • Think about bet sizes
    • However much money you have to bet with, it’s worth considering the size of your wagers. The more you spend on a bet, the more you stand to win. Should you place fewer, bigger bets or more, smaller bets? Should you keep the wagers small, except for one you have a good feeling about? Generally speaking, it’s best to place smaller bets as this stretches your budget and gives you more betting experience
