Cheltenham is the first major horse race of the year, with 2022’s race taking place on the 15th – 18th March. That feels far away, but the talk about this event happens all year round. If you’ve never bet on the horses before, then it’s a great place to start. Here’s everything you need to know about Cheltenham, and how the betting works here.

What Is Cheltenham Festival?

The Cheltenham Festival is one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the UK. There’s a long gap between large events like this, and after a long winter punters are always excited to get involved. Some of the best competitors come together to race here too, as it’s such a high profile event.

Cheltenham takes place at Prestbury Park in Cheltenham, Gloucester, and is the highlight of the National Hunt season. Typically, it’s regarded as one of the very best horse racing events in the world.

The event is focused around four main Championship races, with competitors looking to take home the winning title from each one. These are the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the Stayer’s Hurdle, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The latter is the most prestigious event, and the one that most people will turn out for.#

Betting On Cheltenham Trials

Are you too excited to get into horse betting? Then you don’t have to wait until March for the event proper. You can check out the Cheltenham trials, where many competitors will be racing to secure a spot in the final event.

This is a great event to follow, as you’ll be able to get a good idea of how the horses are shaping up and who’s looking good to win. If you want, you can simply watch and take notes, which you can then use alongside other sources to inform your bets in March. However, there’s nothing stopping you from getting involved in betting. Many sites will be offering odds on these races, so you can jump right in and have fun with it.

Best Cheltenham Betting Sites

#1 Cheltenham Betting Site - bet365

When looking for a bookmaker to use for your Cheltenham horse race betting, Bet365 is a solid choice due to the news section on their site. What this does is allow users of the site to keep up to date with all relevant news relating to the Cheltenham festival which can in turn help you to make successful bets. They also have a large collection of betting markets available to bet on as well as a great live streaming service which means this site should be considered for your Cheltenham bets.

#2 Cheltenham Betting Site - Betfred

Betfred is always a great choice in the UK betting industry due to their positive reputation amongst existing punters. They have a wide array of betting markets available and the yearly Cheltenham festival is no different. They always make sure to have coverage of the most popular races so that their punters don’t miss out on the fun. If you want to follow along with the entire festival this bookmaker makes it very easy to do so!

#3 Cheltenham Betting Site - Unibet

Unibet may not be as well known as some other bookmakers on our list but let me show you why they should be considered when betting on the Cheltenham festival. Not only do they have one of the simplest websites to use, but they take the festival very seriously with their own sponsored race. You may have heard of the Unibet Champions hurdle which takes place alongside the other races of the event. Having a sponsored race shows this brand is very invested into the event so they are a strong contender to receive your bets too.

#4 Cheltenham Betting Site - William Hill

William Hill is one of the UK’s oldest bookmakers and their reputation is up there as one of the best. They have a successful live streaming service on their website however it is not usable on their app at present. They allow in-play betting and live cash outs which gives punters the opportunity to cash out their potential winnings before an event has completely finished. This can work in the bettors favour if their team is doing well up until that point and could get you more winnings than if you waited until the end.

#5 Cheltenham Betting Site - 888sport

888 sport is a fan favourite where betting is concerned. They have an active blog page with lots of information following large festivals and events that their punters can bet on. This allows them to keep up to date on all the latest news and gossip on the latest races and things to be aware of. One thing that makes 888 sport such a popular platform is the smooth and easy to use interface they have for their website which is straightforward to get used to even for newcomers to the site.

#6 Cheltenham Betting Site - Ladbrokes

When looking for a strong contender of bookmakers to make bets on the horse racing, Ladbrokes should be compared to the others. Not only do they have lots of lucrative welcome offers for their new customers, but they also regularly hold generous reload offers for their existing customers to maintain their loyalty. They always make sure to be on top form when it comes to the coverage of large events and the Cheltenham festival is no exception with many of their races having betting ability.

#7 Cheltenham Betting Site - Parimatch

Parimatch has a great live streaming service which makes it really easy to watch the races and events of your choice. The large collection of markets are complemented by the very competitive odds they have to bet on. If you are lucky enough to make some successful predictions then you’ll be pleased to know you can withdraw your winnings much faster with Parimatch than other brands so you’ll get your money in no time. You are able to make in-play live bets on their site, however they can take a while to be approved.

#8 Cheltenham Betting Site - Coral

As expected, Coral is on our comparison list of Cheltenham betting sites due to being on the nation’s favourite bookmakers. They always have lots of coverage of major horse racing events so you’ll never miss an opportunity to bet on what you want. If you’re new to the site you have the chance to take advantage of their enticing welcome offer and can even cash out early during an event after creating your bets.

Step by Step Guide to betting on Cheltenham

Step #1: Open an account or log in

After comparing different betting sites and settling on one, it will be time to log in if you are an existing user, or create a new user account if you haven’t used the site before. To do this, you can reach the Unibet homepage and choose your option in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

If you are a new user you will be first met with a screen allowing you to choose your welcome offer and enter a promo code if you have one. Make sure you don’t forget to enter the code if you have one since you won’t have another opportunity to have a welcome offer promotion.

Unibet's homepage

After completing those first two boxes click the “I want this offer” box to proceed to the next page.

As you can see, the next section is two pages long only so the registration form is rather quick to complete. On the first page you will need to input your legal name that matches your identification documents, as well as your email and password to create the start of your account. Before moving onto the second page you will need to put in your date of birth and gender. Don;t forget to click the “continue” button.

Account details required by Unibet

Account details required by Unibet

The final page of the registration form just needs you to input the postcode of your residential address which will give you some home addresses in a drop down menu so you can select your own. Then you will need to put your phone number in. Make sure you use the correct phone number as this can help you access your account using 2-step verification if you happen to get locked out.

Next, you will need to select which marketing methods you are happy to receive from the site, it’s worth noting that future promotions are often sent to users by email so if you’d rather not miss out, email’s should be considered. Lastly you will need to click the checkbox to confirm your age and terms & conditions of joining the site.

Funding your Unibet account

Funding your Unibet account

Step #2: Depositing money into your account

Now that you are set up with an account and logged in, you can deposit your funds since you will not be able to make bets without money in your account. From the homepage you will see the “deposit” button in the right hand corner of the page. When you click this, it will open a new screen where you can see the card payment method screen. If you do not wish to pay with a card then you can change the payment method by clicking the button at the top of the window.

If this method is ok to continue with, you can select the amount of money you’d like to deposit on the right side. The left will show you the card details after putting in the relevant information to your chosen card.

Make sure to finish this process by clicking the yellow “deposit” button otherwise your account will not be funded.

Step #3: Finding the appropriate horse races to bet on

Unibet' Cheltenham page

Unibet’ Cheltenham page

Now is the time to start looking for the event you’d like to bet on. Since our example is on Cheltenham betting and horse racing, we can take a look in the sportsbook. You can find the sport betting section of the site on the top bar where a handful of the most popular sports are listed. Click on the button that says “races” to be taken to the horse racing betting page.

At the time that the Cheltenham festival is on and in the run up to the events, this is the page where you will find the Cheltenham betting pages.

Above is an example of the festival page relating to the event this year. This event has already passed but I can show you how to make bets on future Cheltenham events in 2023.

Betting markets available for Cheltenham

Betting markets available for Cheltenham

If you would like to make a bet on a horse race, you can do so by clicking on the “racing” button at the top of the page on the green header. This will take you to the page for horse race bets. Since we want to bet specifically on events happening next year, you should click the button about halfway down the page that says “futures”. This will open a page with all future events listed to date. This is where you can click “Cheltenham Festival 2023”.

Picking a race to bet on

Picking a race to bet on

Now, you should choose the specific race you would like to bet on. Once you know which one you’d like, simply click on it and the next page will show a list of the horses participating in that race.

Step #4: Creating a bet slip

Creating your racing betslip

Creating your racing betslip

From the list of horses in the race, take a look at both the specific horses and the various odds available for each one. Once you have decided who you’d like to place your bet on you can click the relevant green button to the right of the horse’s name. This will open the new bet slip for you. Look what happens if I bet on the horse named Facile Vega at the top of the list:

Picking a horse and placing a wager

Picking a horse and placing a wager

From the bet slip you can see that it auto populates the racer stats and the odds. In the empty box you get to type in the cash value you would like to place on your bet. As you can see from the image below, when you input a cash value, the potential winnings update to a new value depending on the calculation from your bet amount.

When you have finished creating your bet, you need to remember to click “Place bet” on the yellow button. Failure to do so will mean your bet is not counted and you will not earn any winnings.

Step #5: Waiting for the bet to settle

As with any bet, you need to wait for the bet to settle (finish) so that you can find out if you made a successful prediction or not. If you were successful with a winning horse on the Cheltenham festival or other race, then you will receive your winnings into your Unibet e-wallet after the race has ended. If you did not make a successful prediction then unfortunately you will not collect any winnings.

As Cheltenham is such a huge betting market with punters, the betting sites really go all out with their offers. Make sure you’re paying attention to their offers in the weeks leading up to the event, as there’s usually some good stuff ready and waiting for you. Here’s some that you’ll want to keep an eye on.

Ante-post betting: This offer is a longer term variation on pre race betting, allowing to place bets on races in the weeks and even months before the races happen.

Many like to take these offers up, as you often get better prices than you would closer to the event itself. However, you’re getting those better prices because there’s more risk involved. While that pick in July might seem safe, once March rolls around it might be a different thing altogether. If you’re willing to take the risk though, you can get some excellent prices this way.

No runner no bet: This offer acts as insurance to you on your bet, making placing bets a much better prospect. Essentially, if you back a horse to race and it doesn’t run, due to injury or other means, then you’ll get your entire stake back.

While you’re not making cash on this offer, you’re actually saving it if anything goes wrong with your bet. If you’re a first time better and are worried about losing cash, then look out for this offer.

Faller insurance: This is a very similar deal to ‘no runner no bet’. Instead of being a pre race deal, the offer applies if your runner starts the event but falls or unseats its jockey. If this happens, you’ll get your stake back.

It’s not a deal you’ll see on as many sites as ‘no runner no bet’, but you’ll still find it on plenty of sites. If it’s something that sounds good to you, look out for it on the major betting sites.

Money back: There are plenty of money back specials that will be floating around online once Cheltenham hype gets started. Usually, they will ensure that you get your money back on a bet, if it meets certain conditions.

For example, if your chosen winner ends 2nd, 3rd or 4th, then you could get your money back on a bet. Keep an eye out for these deals, as they’ll often help you reduce losses when you’re betting.

Cheltenham Special Offers

As well as the offers that are available to you during Cheltenham, there should be plenty of special offers happening around this time. The offers are generally there to save you money, should the bet go not as you want. These, on the other hand, will help you boost your winnings. Look out for the following when you’re placing bets:

Extra places: When you’re betting on Cheltenham horses, there should be some extra places available to you on each way bets. You’ll get extra sports for places, giving you more betting options.

When it comes to Cheltenham, some bookies get very generous with this offer. Usually, an extra place offer just gives you one extra place. Some may take it up to five, giving you more options for boosting your winnings.

Welcome offers: Not signed up with a betting site then? Then Cheltenham is the best time to do so, as you can get some amazing welcome deals designed to boost those odds.

Usually, these will give you huge odds on a single high risk, high reward wager. For example, you could get 40/1 on a particular horse to win a certain race. That’s something to take advantage of if you like that horse to win.

Special bets: When you’re making Cheltenham bets, most of them will go on standard bet types that are more or less safe. However, you can get some more out of your bets by placing special bets. During the event, bookies will have some exciting offers, allowing you to get those bigger wins. You’ll need to make sure you’re checking your site’s promo section to see what’s on offer to you.

For example, you can bet on the top overall winner, the top trainer, or the top jockey over all events at the festival. There’s another classic special bet, where you can bet on either the British or the Irish to take the Prestbury Cup.

Each way: An each way bet actually gives you two different wagers. The first part of the bet is the ‘win’ part, where you bet on the race winner. The second part is the ‘place’. This means that if your horse doesn’t win, but does place within a certain range, then you’ll still get paid. The odds on this part of the bet are usually around ¼ or 1/5, but it helps you reduce losses.

This is best used in competitive races, such as the Handicap Chase. This helps you cover your bases when making that bet.

Multiples: A multiple bet is a high risk, high reward bet. When it comes to the horses, you’ll place your race winner bets on a succession of different races. You’ll see many punters doing this, spreading out their predictions for race winners over a single day of races.

If you do go this way, you have to remember that your chances of winning these bets is rather low.

Cheltenham Betting Markets

Now we’ve covered the specials, let’s look at the betting markets you should be looking for when betting on Cheltenham races.

Race winner: Here’s your most standard bet that you can make. You’re simply betting on which horse you think will win the race. In theory that’s quite simple, but often at Cheltenham over 30 different runners can take part in a single race, making it harder to pick out that winner.

You can help yourself by watching the trials and seeing who’s doing the best out on the track. When picking a horse, you’ll see that the odds for even the favourites are typically around 6/1 or 7/1. Those who are less favourited to win can go up to 150/1.

Past race results for the Cheltenham 2022 season

Over the course of four days, there are 28 races at the Cheltenham Festival and every single one of these races needs a winner and a runner up.

These 4 races below in the table are the largest and most known of the entire festival but they are by no means the only ones to consider.

Race Winner 2nd Place
Ryanair chase Allaho Janidil

Finding The Best Tips

The trials have happened, and now you’re in the run up to the big day. You want to find some good tips on who’s going to win, so you can place some strategic bets. Where can you find them? There’s a few different places you should be looking:

Social media: Hunt down the big betting names on social media, such as Ladbrokes, Coral, and so on. In the run up to the event, they will be posting about it and showing who’s looking good so far. You can take note of all these tips and see what’s good for you.

As well as the betting sites themselves, make sure you’re following the big betting review and tips sites, too. They’ll have a social media presence, and they’ll also have plenty of tips for you to be checking out.

Betting site blogs: If you’re already a member of a betting site, it’s likely that they have a blog. Make sure you take a look at it, as there’s likely going to be some useful info here. These blogs are written by professionals that are looking to bring you the very best tips, so make sure you keep an eye on these.

What else should you consider before Cheltenham betting

Pay attention to the jockey and horse stats

Similar to many other sports, if you don’t know anything about the players, it can be very hard to come up with an accurate prediction of the outcomes. When looking at the statistics, there are a few key things you should try to learn to give yourself the upper hand.

  • Any previous wins?

Does either the jockey or the horse involved have any previous wins? If they do, how long ago was it? Was it the same track length?

  • Have they recovered from recent injuries?

Have either the horse or jockey had any injuries or medical issues recently and if so, have they fully recovered from it? When you consider the pressure these horses are under during the Cheltenham festival they need to be on their top form to stand any chance at winning.

Final thoughts on Cheltenham betting sites

As such a popular horse racing event it is vital that you take the time to compare the various bookmakers that allow betting on the Cheltenham festivities. With a large number of races, and plenty of horse participants with varying stats, you’ll have your work cut out for you choosing the site that suits your needs the most. It’s one of the most popular sporting events that happens annually and has betting markets available to be bet on already almost a year in advance. By following the tips on what to look out for, you’ll be able to select an appropriate betting site while also enjoying keeping up with Cheltenham races. Good luck, and keep on betting!
