Some exciting news has been announced for fans of esports Competitive Gaming – after a 3-year pause, the Overwatch World Cup is coming back in 2023. Based on Overwatch 2, the preparation of the tournament will start as early as January 2023, and the event will conclude at some point in the autumn. The tournament announcement was made on the official Overwatch website, where the game team did not even try to hide their excitement. In addition to this, the official Overwatch Twitter account posted a teaser video with footage from previous tournaments.

The new Overwatch World Cup tournament will be split into 3 stages. The first stage, starting in January 2023, will be an announcement of the competitors. This is where the creators of Overwatch 2, Blizzard Entertainment, will select 36 countries and regions who will compete in the tournament. In addition to this, Blizzard will open the Committee application process, and will start vetting the candidates for the committee.

The second stage will take place between February and June and will contain 5 events. Firstly, in February, there will be the World Cup trials, which is an open tournament that will earn teams a guaranteed spot in the Country and Regional Team try-outs. Roughly around the same time, Blizzard Entertainment will announce the Committees that will overlook and judge the competition. Then, in March, the Committees will hold team try-outs. The Committees will then select countries and regional teams from the try-outs. Finally, in June 2023, the World Cup Qualifiers will commence. The 36 countries and regional teams will participate in 6 regional qualifiers, which will be used to narrow down the top 16 teams who will compete in the Overwatch World Cup 2023 Group Stage.

The Group Stage and the Finals will take part in the autumn. The Group Stage take places as a LAN round robin, which means that every team will play each other once. The teams will be awarded points based on their performance. The top 8 teams will progress to the finals, which will take the format of a single elimination bracket.

The last time the Overwatch World Cup was held was in 2019, when the United States team won against China, winning its first international title. Third place was taken by South Korea, and 4th by France. The United Kingdom ranked at No. 10. The total prize pool for the event was $205,000. The teams ranking at No. 1-6 were awarded $10,000 each, and those ranked at No. 7-10 received $7,500. The other $115,000 were awarded to the teams participating at preliminary stages.

In the United Kingdom, the fans of Overwatch and Competitive Gaming will be able to place bets on their favourite teams through several of the leading UK betting sites. These include Unibet, who are running a bonus offer of £40 Moneyback plus £10 casino; Betfair (up to £100 in free bets using the exclusive findbettingsites.co.uk promo code); Betiton (Bet £15 get £10 introductory offer); and William Hill (new customers’ offer of Bet £10 get £30).

Meanwhile, Overwatch fans and experts worldwide will have another reason to follow the tournament with interest. The Overwatch World Cup is traditionally an opportunity to see players compete for their countries instead of their Overwatch League teams. Most, if not all, players competing in the event will have some experience at Contender or Overwatch League level, however the last World Cup helped less known players from under-represented regions show off their skills and secure competitive contracts after the end of the tournament. It also allowed countries who were not well-known for their Overwatch skills to make their name and earn a reputation of an Overwatch power. One of these was Denmark, who ranked at No.5 in the world.

It has already been announced that the 2023 World Cup would feature one important change. As it will be based on Overwatch 2, it means that that the tournaments will feature 5v5 games instead of 6v6. This recent change has caused the tank player to be more important and to have a bigger role in the game, which will certainly change the dynamics of the tournament. In the 2019 tournament, the T-Mobile MVP Award went to US team member sinatraa – a highly successful player who won a large number of titles and awards throughout his career. He is now retired at the age of 22.
