Coral sponsor three major snooker competitions (World Grand Prix, Tour Championship and Snooker Players Championship), which make up the Coral Cup. Clearly, they are invested in snooker betting. Coral are able to match the odds of most other bookmakers, but Coral make sure to enhance your earnings by offering acca specials, meaning there is lots of opportunity to win big, when betting with Coral. Coral also offer live streaming (for bets over £1), which is incredibly useful during high-pressure matches. Additionally, Coral reward newcomers and loyal users equally, by offering generous promotions for new and existing customers. Overall, Coral are a solid choice for snooker bettors, despite the fact that they do not specialise in the Masters.

#2 Masters Snooker Betting Site - William Hill

William Hill have made significant progress in their snooker betting over the years, and so have an impressive, sophisticated menu. Having a clean menu is often an underrated feature of top betting sites, because  it is important for you to assess all your options, and navigate around the website efficiently and easily. William Hill also compete with other bookmakers by offering additional services such as betting live in-play, cash out and live streaming matches. The options are vast, and you can take advantage of that.

Lastly, Unibet are reliable for covering every tournament, every year. Unibet have been working on optimising their in-play options, featuring live streaming, stats updates and tracking live scores. Furthermore, Unibet have developed a clean menu, which is incredibly easy to navigate. Unibet are also very good at including all sports, which means that snooker benefits, as football does not dominate the main page of the website.

New customers can claim up to £40 of money back if your first bet loses

The world of competitive snooker enjoys three major tournaments every year: the World Snooker Championship (est. 1927), the UK Championship (est. 1977), and the Masters (est. 1975). The latter, an invitational tournament which is widely held as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport, is the focus of this article.

As you can see, there is a vast range of websites for you to use, in order to place your bets for the Masters. Each one has different assets to improve your experience, so it is worth taking some time to consider which bookie suits your desires the most. Choosing the right bookmaker could change an average profit into a large bonus, or alternatively could save you from unsuccessful bets.

Overall Odds

It is also useful to be aware of the odds of previous tournaments – if you know these, you will be able to build a rough idea about what the odds of next year’s tournament may look like. This way, you stay ahead of the curve. Obviously, the odds on players in 2022 will be different to those in 2024, due to a range of circumstances: each player’s performance in the previous tournament, their performance in the previou Masters, their head-to-head record against other players in the tournament, their current form and so on. Considering this, here were (most of) the odds for the top 10 players, from our list of different betting companies, for the 2022 Masters:

Bookmaker Judd Trump Neil Robertson Ronnie O’Sullivan Mark Selby John Higgins Kyren Wilson Yan Bingtao Stuart Bingham Shaun Murphy
Coral 3/1 5/1 5/1 6/1 8/1 14/1 14/1 33/1 12/1
William Hill 11/4 11/2 5/1 6/1 11/1 12/1 20/1 20/1 16/1
Betfred 7/4
888 Sport 11/4 5/1 9/2 5/1 11/1 14/1 20/1 20/1 14/1
Paddy Power 3/1 5/1 9/2 11/2 10/1 14/1 22/1 20/1 16/1
Ladbrokes 11/4 11/2 9/2 11/2 12/1 12/1 20/1 25/1 12/1

Betting Markets

Due to the nature of snooker, there are a range of betting markets that can be exploited, in order to maximise the potential of each match. Of course there are some basic markets, that are popular among casual bettors – however, there are some niche markets, which can be used in conjunction with the popular options. Often, more specific markets are slightly harder to win on, because there are many more possible results. With this in mind, here is a full list of betting markets for the Masters:

A snooker table

A snooker table

Match Winner

This is the most obvious option – betting on the winner of the match as a whole. This market is broad, and therefore popular, because there are only 2 (or 3, if draws are included) possible outcomes: a win or a loss. The margin of victory does not matter. Winning on this type of market will normally be less lucrative, because options are limited. However, it is a good idea to bet on this type of market, as (due to the nature of tournament snooker) players who are favoured to win do not always perform on the day. Betting on lower seeded players is risky but incredibly rewarding when successful.

Frame Winner

This bet involves betting on which player will win the next frame. This type of bet is another common option, as once the players have settled into the match, it is not uncommon for frames to be dominated by one player. This market is risky if the match is very close, but in this case it is possible to predict a pattern (as the players take it in turn to break frames, the player who takes the second shot is at an advantage, since it is unlikely to pot a ball from a break). If you can learn how to predict each frame winner, this market could become a lucrative option.

Highest Break

Highest break is where you predict which player will have achieved the highest break, by the end of the match – where a break is how many more points one player has over the other. This bet is slightly less popular, as the match winner might not necessarily achieve the highest break. Snooker is a game where rhythm matters – the loser of the match could still have one frame where they are in a perfect rhythm, and are able to pot consistently. However, it is mostly agreed that the winner of the match is more likely to earn the highest break, because they obviously are playing better on the day.

Fouls

Many sites will also give bettors and option to predict whether there will be a foul or not in the next frame. This market is largely ignored, but if you can analyse the match and predict that there will be a foul, there is no reason not to put some money on this. This could be included as part of an acca, if you want to maximise the potential profit.

147 Frame

147 is the maximum number of points a player can score, by potting balls in a particular order. It is the equivalent of a hole-in-one in golf: a perfect frame. This market is one of the most niche offers, but can bring in substantial revenue if predicted correctly. This option is incredibly risky, and epitomises the idea of risk vs reward, in the world of snooker betting.

Match Result

Betting on the match result includes predicting the specific final score. In a best of 19 frames, the result can range from a 10-9 win, to a 10-0 whitewash. As the match progresses, it becomes easier to predict the final score. However, the odds will always reflect this, so betting in-play, near the end of the match will greatly decrease your earnings if your bet is successful. A popular option, but one with many possible outcomes.

Tournament Winner

Lastly, one of the more common options is to bet on who will be the outright tournament winner. This is fairly self-explanatory – you predict who will win the Masters. This market is slightly unpredictable, because there is unlikely to be only one player who has a significant advantage over their competition. Normally, household names such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Neil Robertson and Judd Trump are all competing for the top spot. An impressive bet if successful, but one where multiple outcomes could spoil your party.

Rules of Masters Snooker

The rules of Masters Snooker are simple enough to learn and understand, especially once you begin watching games. Learning how matches are played is crucial to becoming a successful bettor, as you will understand how players can win/lose their games. Here is a basic outline of the rules:

The rules of snooker are easy enough to understand. Once you can confidently read and understand matches, and once you have learned how matches are won and lost, you will then need to familiarise yourself with the format of the Masters tournament. The game is played between two players who take alternating turns to pot all of the 21 coloured balls, using the white cue ball. Each game is called a ‘frame’ – named after the triangular-shaped frame that helps align the red balls for the first shot of each game. To win a game, a player must accumulate as many points as possible, by potting balls in the correct order. Here is how each ball is valued:

Ball Amount on the Table Value
White 1 0 (cue ball)
Red 15 1
Yellow 1 2
Green 1 3
Brown 1 4
Blue 1 5
Pink 1 6
Black 1 7

The first striker (player who is taking their turn) must open the frame by hitting at least one of the red balls with the cue ball – at the opening shot the balls are organised in a certain layout:

As you can see, the white cue ball must be used to hit one of the red balls. Potting a ball (hitting it so it falls into one of the six pockets on the table) will grant you the appropriate number of points, and will also give you an extra turn – potting multiple balls in a row is useful to hold your presence on the table. Potting a red ball allows the striker to pot a ball of a different colour, as a means of accumulating more points. For example, the striker could pot a red, and then on his extra turn, pot a black: this would give him a total of eight points for these two turns. Due to this, the maximum amount of points a player can score in a frame is 147. Potting a ball that is not red in this way will result in this ball being replaced on the table, in its default position, as seen on the image above. Once all of the red balls have been potted, the striker must pot the other coloured balls in ascending order of points – yellow, then green, brown, blue, pink and finally black. If the striker fails to pot a ball, control of the table is handed over to their opponent.

In terms of fouls, there are a selection of actions which will result in action from the referee. Primarily, potting any ball in the incorrect order will result in four or more points being handed instead to the opponent. For example, if the striker pots the black ball instead of a required red ball, the opponent will receive the full seven points (the value of the black ball), as well as control of the table. In addition, other fouls include potting the cue ball, causing any ball to leave the surface of the table, exceeding the allowed time limit per shot (60 seconds), and touching the cue ball more than once in a single turn. Fouls like these can swing the momentum of the game significantly, so it is important to know how they are caused.

The key thing to remember in snooker, is the fact that the players plan their strikes based on how it will set them up for the next strike. It is key you try to predict what they are thinking, and how the table might look two, three or even four shots later.

Key words:

Required object ball: The next ball in the designated order – the cue ball must make        contact with this ball.

Break: Total number of points scored in one visit to the table.

Snookered: When the cue ball is in such a position where the required object ball is      obstructed.

Frame: A single piece of play where the balls on the table are reset.

Game: A given number of frames, won when a player achieves this number OR makes it     impossible for their opponent to reach this number

Ball in hand: After the cue ball is potted, the new striker is able to place it wherever they desire, within the ‘D’ shaped area at the top of the table.

Masters Format:

The Masters is split into 4 rounds of matches – each match with a designated number of games that are required to win it, and therefore move on to the next round:

  1. Round of 16 – 16 players (best of 11 frames)
  2. Quarter-Finals – 8 players (best of 11 frames)
  3. Semi-Finals – 4 players (best of 11 frames)
  4. Final – 2 players (best of 19 frames)

Seeds are determined like this:

1st Seed: Previous Masters Winner

2nd Seed: Previous World Snooker Championships Winner

3rd – 16th Seed: Official World Rankings

While a player’s seed does indicate their ability, it is not the only factor which should effect your decision when betting on a match. However, comparing the seeds of two opponents is a good way to establish who is the favourite in a match. Other things to note, when comparing players, include their: current form, history in the competition and their individual strengths/weaknesses.
